Arne Helgeson was born at Ål, Buskerud, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company H. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway.
The army listed Helgeson as living in Clermont, Fayette County, IA, age 34, and married. He enlisted on January 29, 1862 at Clermont, and mustered at Madison, WI on February 13, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was left sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. He was in hospital at Bowling Green, KY on September 17, 1862, and in Nashville, TN on December 26, 1862. He was sick in Knoxville, TN on February 28, 1864. He was sent to hospital on July 18, 1864 and then to the hospital in Chattanooga, TN on July 23, 1864. He was mustered out with H Company on February 13, 1865 at Chattanooga. In 1892, he was a farmer in Inwood, Lyon County, IA. Arne and Sigrid had at least three children, including: Annette A. (1862), Knute (1866), and Syver (1869).
