Hans Jacob Tobiasen was born December 18, 1844, on the Svennevig farm in Lyngdal parish, Vest-Agder, Norway. He immigrated with his parents and siblings on the Emigrant, arriving August 5, 1850. Henderson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of his company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed Henderson as living in Houston County, MN, age 17, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 9, 1862, in Houston County, and mustered on January 27, 1862, at Madison, WI, as a Private (Menig). He was absent, sick since November 28, 1863. He mustered out with A Company in Chattanooga, TN, on December 20, 1864.
After the war, he moved back to Minnesota. He married Mary Luella “Ellen” Hazen and had at least four children: Adella (1876-1895), Jonathan Shotwell (1877-1954), Theodore (1883-1956), and William (1896-1963). They lived in Parkers Prairie, Otter Tail County, MN. His wife died in 1896. In 1910, Hans and William were living with Jonathan and his family in Mountain Iron, MN. Hans died on April 8, 1917 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Virginia, St. Louis County, MN.
