John N. Hoverud joined WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.”
The army listed Hoverud as living in Perry, Dane County, WI, age 23, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 23, 1861 in Dane County, and mustered on December 8, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was an escort with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL on October 13, 1863. He was sick in Chattanooga, TN on November 28, 1863, and also sick in Nashville. He mustered out with Company E in Chattanooga, TN, 20 Dec 1864. On January 9, 1886 he filed a pension.
