Edward Howland joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city.
The army listed Howland as living in Chicago, IL, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 11, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered on December 2, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was missing in action in the battle of Stones River, TN on December 31, 1862, and found to have been taken prisoner. He was exchanged, paroled, and sent to St. Louis, MO. On July 22, 1863, he was assigned as a clerk in the 20th Army Corps Inspection office. He was then assigned as a clerk in Captain Pope’s office on October 16, 1863, and shortly thereafter as a clerk in the Division Commissary department on October 26, 1863. Howland mustered out with the company in Chattanooga, TN, on 20 Dec 1864.
