Jacob Jacobson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet. The army listed him as living in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, WI, age 44, and a sailor. He had brown eyes, gray hair, ruddy complexion, and stood 5’9”. He enlisted for three years on August 20, 1862 at Milwaukee, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He had a bounty of $100. Jacobson was wounded at Chickamauga, GA on September 19, 1863, sent to hospital in Chattanooga, TN, and then north to Harvey Hospital in Madison, WI. He was discharged from the service from there because of his wounds on September 20, 1864. In 1890, he was living in New Glarus, Dane County, WI.
