James Johnson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.” The army listed him as living in Clinton, Rock County, WI, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 3, 1861 at Beloit, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 13, 1861 as a Private (Menig). He was with the Brigade on Military Police duty on May 1, 1864 and served at the headquarters of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Division, 4th Army Corps. He was promoted to Corporal (Korporal) on September 1, 1864. He mustered out with Company G on January 13, 1865 at Chattanooga, TN.
After the war, he lived in Manchester Township, Freeborn County, MN and worked as a farmer. He married Sina Marie. They had at least five children, including: Ingerborg (1872), Ella Amanda (1873), Andrias J. (1876), Petra Mathilde (1878), and Sina Johanne (1879).
