Johan Marcus Johnsen was born in Sannidal parish, Telemark, and left from Kragerø in 1853 with his mother.
John M. Johnson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.” The army listed him as living in Primrose, Dane County, WI, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 1, 1861, in Dane County, and mustered on December 8, 1861, at Madison, WI, as a Private (Menig). Johnson was with the provision transport from Stevenson, AL, on October 13, 1863. He was also with the Ambulance Corps on May 5, 1864. Johnson mustered out with Company E on December 20, 1864.
After the war, Johnson returned to Dane County, married, and moved to Winnebago Co., IA. John and Isabella had 13 children: Nils Johan (1867-?1885), Joseph Martin (1869-1957), Paulus Elias (1870-1885), Ellen Carine (1871-1933), Josephine Christine (1872-1968), Henry Samuel (1874-1947), Klara Luvise (1876-1960), Charles Aleat (1877-1937), George Phillip Ingeham (1879-?1954), Anna Rebecka (1880-1883), William Benjamin (1882-1946), Alvin R. (1884-1914), and Norman Elias (1885-1956).
