Johnson joined WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.” The army listed him as living in Primrose, Dane County, WI, age 24, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 4, 1861 at Beloit, WI, and mustered on December 13, 1861 at Madison, WI. Johnson was designated Sergeant (Sersjant) on January 1, 1862. Since he was a layman and without ordination, he could not be a Chaplain. The governor, on October 19, 1864, officially commissioned him a Field Chaplain. He mustered out on January 13, 1865.
After the war, he married Anna Larsen on July 7, 1867 in Richwood, Richland County, WI. He was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church and served as a pastor in Coon Prairie, Vernon County, WI. Anna died in 1915. He died in 1899.
