Ole Johnson was born in Hallingdal, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of the company called themselves the “St. Olaf’s Rifles.” They were also known as the “Sailor Company” because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the “Chicago Company” because so many of its members were residents of that city. The army listed him as living in Winneshiek County, IA, age 20, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 8, 1862 in IA, and mustered on January 27, 1862 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). Johnson was assigned to guard provision stores at Camp Ethridge since June 23, 1862. He was absent left sick in Humboldt, TN on July 4, 1862. He died of disease in Nashville, TN on November 13, 1862 and was buried in cemetery at Nashville; section A, grave 1335.
