Peter Johnson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.” The army listed him as living in Primrose, Dane County, WI, age 26, and married. He enlisted for three years on December 20, 1861 in Dane County, and mustered the same day at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig).
Johnston was detached as a hospital orderly (Nurse), and left at Bowling Green, KY on September 16, 1862 and for awhile in 1863. He was sick in the hospital at Chattanooga, TN on November 28, 1863 and also later in Nashville. Johnston was wounded in his right side in the Battle at New Hope Church, GA on May 27, 1864. He was sent to the hospital at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO. He mustered out on December 20, 1864 at Madison, WI.
