Soren Johnson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted. The army listed him as living in Iola, Waupaca County, WI, age 23, a farmer, and unmarried. He had blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and stood 5’7”. He enlisted for three years on November 4, 1861 at Scandinavia, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 20, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Johnston was sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10 in September and October 1863. He was killed in action, a minnie ball shot in his head, at Resaca, GA on May 15, 1864. He was buried in the National Cemetery at Chattanooga, TN, section L, grave 317.
