David W. Jones was born in November 1843 in NY. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.” The army listed him as living in Newark, Rock County, WI, age 18, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 31, 1861 at Beloit, WI, and mustered at Madison, WI on December 13, 1861 as a Private (Menig). Jones was discharged from the service for disability due to disease at Cincinnati, OH on July 29, 1862.
After the war, he returned to WI. He married Elmira and they had five children: Estella (1867), Nellie (1871), Belle (1875), Earl (1878) and Nina (1887). Between 1875 and 1878, they moved to IL. In the 1880 Census, Jones worked keeping a news office and they lived in Belvidere, Boone County, IL. In January 1881, he was granted a pension of $12 a month because of chronic diarrhea (pension No. 181,433). By 1887, they were living in Brantford, Hamlin County, SD. He was elected postmaster of Hazel, Hamlin, SD on April 15, 1889.
