Nils Frederik Severin Kammen was born on December 23, 1841, in Leikanger parish, Norway. He left on April 18, 1861 to come to America. Fredrick Kammen, with his brother, Hans, joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from that WI county.
The army listed him as living in Mt. Horeb, Dane County, WI, age 20, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 9, 1862 at Mt. Horeb, and mustered at Madison, WI, on January 18, 1862, as a Private (Menig). Kammen was left behind sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. He is said to have been discharged from the service from there on July 15, 1862.
