Buck Kirk was born in Franklin County, AL. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted. The army listed him as being 22 years old and a Negro (“Mullato”). Kirk enlisted for three years at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on September 6, 1863, and mustered at Chattanooga, TN on November 27, 1863 as a Private (Menig) and undercook. He was temporarily assigned to the WI 24th Infantry on February 13, 1865. He transferred to I Company of the WI 13th Infantry on June 10, 1865.
