Paul Kittelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that WI county when they enlisted. The army listed him as living in Gallagher, IA, age 44, and married. Kittelson enlisted for three years on January 14, 1862 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on January 18, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was discharged from the service for disease at Island No. 10 on September 20, 1862.
After the war, Kittelson returned to IA. He filed a pension in 1883. In 1885, he was living in Elgin, Fayette County, IA.
