Knud Kittilson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from that WI county. The army listed him as living in Leland, IL, age 34, and unmarried. Kittilson enlisted for three years on February 25, 1862 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on March 1, 1862 as a Private (Menig). He was sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 11, 1862. On December 31, 1862, he was wounded and taken prisoner at Stones River, TN. He was a prisoner of war on parole at Dennison, OH, and at St. Louis, MO. He was transferred to Veterans Reserve Corps on October 14, 1863.
