The army listed him as living in Mower County, MN, age 20, and unmarried. Knutson enlisted for three years at Madison, WI, on March 6, 1862, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He was sick and given leave on June 2, 1863. He was sick again in Chattanooga, TN, in November 1863, and in Knoxville, TN, in December 1863. Knudson transferred to WI 24th Infantry on February 10, 1865. He was discharged from the service at Huntsville, AL, on March 13, 1865, at the expiration of his term of service.
