The army listed him as living in Chicago, IL, age 32, and married. He enlisted for three years on October 28, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered on November 15, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). Kydland was reported to be sick on June 3, 1862 in St. Louis, MO. He was detached from his company to serve as an orderly in the general hospital in Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis on March 4, 1862.
