Knud Knudsen Landru was born on July 23, 1841 in Rollag (Veggli) parish, Buskerud, Norway to Knud Nielsen Landerud and Ingeborg Herbrandsdatter Ødegaard. He came to America in 1842 on the Clarissa at the age of one with his parents and siblings. In 1850, they were living in Clinton, Rock County, WI, under the surname, “Nelson”. In 1860, still going by Nelson, the family was living in Primrose, Dane County, WI. Knud’s grandmother, Kari/Caroline Ingemundsdatter Landru (bapt. 1780) lived with them.

Landru joined the WI 15th Infantry and his brother, Herbrand (Hiram) joined the IA 32nd  Infantry. The army listed Knud as living in Primrose, Dane County, WI, and as a Private (Menig). Nothing else is known about his service.

After the war, Knud relocated to Winnebago County, IA, and went by the name Newton K. Landru. On October 16, 1865, he married Catherine (Catharina Eriksdatter Arnetvedt, also called Caroline, Carrie and Annie C.) Severson in Winnebago County. They resided in Center, Winnebago, IA, until the late 1870s. He and his wife had at least five children, including Annette Josephine “Nettie” (1867-1951), Newton Elsworth  (1869-1873), Walter Norman (1873-1924), Wilfred Clarance (1878-1942), and Josephine (adopted, 1894).  Before Wilfred’s birth, the family relocated to Yellow Medicine County, MN. In 1880, they were living in Hammer. In 1900, they were living in Canby. On December 6, 1908, Landru died. He is buried in Canby City Cemetery, Canby, Yellow Medicine County, MN. His wife died on December 29, 1924 and is buried in the same cemetery.
