Edwin Larson was born in Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet. The army listed him as living in Madison, Dane County, WI, age 32, and a sailor. He had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, and stood 5’10”. Larson enlisted for three years on September 8, 1862 at Madison, and mustered there the same day as a Private (Menig). He had a bounty $100. Larson was absent without leave on December 31, 1862 (during the Battle of Stones River). He was discharged from the service because of disability on April 3, 1863 at Murfreesboro, TN.
