Jens Larson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet. The army listed him as living in Columbus, Columbia County, WI, age 24, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 10, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Corporal (Korporal). He died of disease at Regimental Hospital in Nashville, TN on November 22, 1862. He was buried in National Cemetery there. A pension was filed in his name by his mother, Thore Olson Vangen on June 24, 1879.
