Knud Larson was born on April 11, 1841 in Voss, Hordaland, Norway, the son of Lars Pedersen Gjerme and Asgjerd Rognaldsdatter Glimme. Knud came to America with his parents and four siblings reaching NY on June 30, 1845, on the Kong Sverre out of Bergen.
Larson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company H. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway. The army listed him as living in Leeds Centre, Columbia County, WI, age 21, unmarried, and a farmer. He had blue eyes, auburn hair, fair complexion, and stood 6’ tall. He enlisted for three years on January 29, 1862, at Madison, WI, and mustered there on February 13, 1862, as a Private (Menig). He was wounded by a gunshot into his hip at Stones River, TN, on December 31, 1862, and sent to the hospital. He died of his wound at hospital No. 14 in Nashville, TN, on July 18, 1863. He was buried in Nashville National Cemetery; section B, grave 704.
