Ole Mikkelson was born in Hedalen, Sør-Aurdal, Valders, Oppland fylke, Norway. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.
The army listed Mikkelson as living in Black Earth, Dane County, WI, age 24, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 8, 1861 at Manitowoc, WI, and mustered on December 12, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). His brother, Torgrim Mikkelson, also served. Ole died of disease in hospital at Jacinto, MS on August 10, 1862. Mikkelson was buried in National Cemetery at Corinth, MS. His mother filed a pension in his name in 1867.
