The army listed Monsen as living in Chicago, IL, age 30, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on December 27, 1861 at Chicago. He mustered on January 1, 1862 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). On June 11, 1862, he was sick at Mississippi River Island No. 10. He was sick again in the hospital at Lebanon, KY on October 27, 1862 and became unfit for service because of illness. On April 18, 1863, he was discharged from the service for disability at Quincy, IL.
