Morgan Murphy was born in Ficonne, Ireland. He joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.” He enlisted in Beloit, WI on November 30, 1861. He mustered at Madison, Dane County, WI as a Private (Menig) on December 13, 1861. The army listed him as 38 and a shoemaker. He had blue eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, and standing 6 feet tall.
Murphy was accidentally killed by a provost guard and died at a hospital in Cairo, IL on September 7, 1863. He was buried at the National Cemetery, Mound City, IL, section A, grave 483.
