James R. Nelson was born in Genesee County, NY. He enlisted in Company K of the WI 15th Infantry in January 1863. The army listed him as living in Dover, Racine County, WI, age 43, and a mason. He had gray eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and stood 5’11”. He mustered as a Private (Menig). He transferred to K Company of the WI 13th Infantry in Huntsville, AL on February 5, 1864. He was discharged on November 24, 1865 in San Antonio, TX.

After the war in 1880, he lived in Medford, Taylor County, WI with his wife, Irene. He worked as a farmer. They had at least two children: John (1859) and Frank (1861). In 1887, he was admitted to the Northwestern Branch of the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Milwaukee, WI. He died of old age on June 14, 1893 and is buried in Wood National Cemetery in Milwaukee.
