Knud Nelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company H. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway.

The army listed Nelson as living in Leeds Centre, Columbia County, WI, born in Voss, Norway, and age 28. He enlisted for three years on November 21, 1861 at Leeds Centre and mustered at Madison, WI on February 13, 1862 as a Private (Menig). Nelson was captured by the enemy at New Hope Church, GA on May 27, 1864. He died of scurvy in Andersonville Prison on July 30, 1864. He was buried there in grave 4289.
