Lars Nelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company H. The men of the company called themselves “Heg’s Rifles” in honor of the 15th commander, Colonel Hans C. Heg. They were also known as the “Voss Company” because of a large number of them who were from the Voss region of Norway.
The army listed Nelson as living in Neenah, Winnebago County, WI, born in Denmark, age 20, and unmarried. He worked as a miller, had blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, and stood 5’6”. He enlisted for three years on December 22, 1861 at Neenah and mustered at Madison, WI on February 13, 1862 as a Private (Menig). Nelson died of disease in the hospital at Nashville, TN on February 25, 1863 and buried in the National Cemetery at Nashville; section E, grave 875.
