Nels Nelson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company D. The men of the company called themselves the “Norway Wolf Hunters.” They were also known as the “Waupun Company” because so many of its members were from Waupun.
The army listed Nelson as living in Spring Prairie, Adams County, WI, age 22, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on November 23, 1861 at Spring Prairie, and mustered on December 8, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). Nelson was killed at Stones River, TN on December 31, 1862. He was buried in National Cemetery there; section H, grave 98.
