Haakon Nielson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company G. The men of the company called themselves the “Rock River Rangers.”
The army listed him as living in Madison, Dane County, WI, age 25, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on January 16, J1862 at Madison and mustered there as a Private (Menig). Nielson died of typhoid fever in a hospital at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on June 9, 1862. He was buried in Mississippi River National Cemetery at Memphis, TN.
