Ole A. Nordbye joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company B. The men of the company called themselves the “Wergeland Guards” in honor of Henrik Wergeland, the famous Norwegian writer and poet.

The army listed Nordbye as listing in Cambridge, WI, age 34, and married. He enlisted for three years on October 10, 1861 at Madison, WI, and mustered there on November 16, 1861 as a Sergeant (Sersjant). Nordbye left behind at Iuka, MS on August 21, 1862 because of illness. He ran off the same day, but was found and given a discharge from the service for disease at Jackson, TN on October 29, 1862.
