Morten Johannesen was born at Hjelle, Ringebu parish, Oppland, the son of Johans/Johannes  Mortensen and Anne Gulbrandsdatter. His parents affectionately called him “Lillemorten”. The family lived mostly on the Nyfløt farm and he used that name when he left the parish for America in 1857.

As Martin J. Norde, he joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company I. The men of the company called themselves the “Scandinavian Mountaineers” but were also known as the “Waupaca Company” because so many of them were living in that Wisconsin county when they enlisted.

The army listed Norde as living in Scandinavia, Waupaca County, WI, and age 19. He enlisted for three years on November 20, 1861, at Scandinavia, and mustered at Madison, WI, on December 20, 1861, as a Private (Menig). He was with the provisions transport from Stevenson, AL, in October 1863, and was then sent on recruiting duty on November 21, 1863. On January 1, 1865, he was promoted to Sergeant of Ordnance (orderly?) and then to First Sergeant (Sersjant). Norde mustered out on February 10, 1865.

After the war, Norde married Ingeborg Salvesdatter/Isabelle. In 1870, they were living in Ida, Douglas County, MN, and he  was working as a farmer. In 1880, he was working as a merchant in Alexandria, Douglas County. He died on November 22, 1890,  and is buried in Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria, Douglas Co, Minnesota.
