Aasmund Olson was born as Osmund on May 22, 1829 in Valle/Bykle, Aust-Agder, Norway. His parents were Ole Tarjesen Trydal and Eli Osmundsdatter. He married Isabelle in Norway before they immigrated to the U.S. in 1854. They first lived in Rock County, WI and then relocated to York Township, Fillmore County, MN two years later. They had at least two children: Joel (Aug. 16, 1858) and Anna. One source stated that they had three sons and three daughters. They family had 160 acres of farmland.
Olson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company E. The men of the company called themselves “Odin’s Rifles.” The army listed him as living in York, Fillmore County, MN, age 33, and married. He enlisted for three years on October 23, 1861 at La Crosse, WI, and mustered on December 1, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was left sick at Bowling Green, KY on November 4, 1862. Olson was sent to hospital at Nashville, TN on August 8, 1863 and then transferred to the Invalid Corps on September 26, 1863.
After the war, he returned to York, Fillmore County, MN. Records list him as Osmund Olson and Osmund Olson Trydal. He died in 1871. His wife filed a pension in his name on June 14, 1887 in MN.
