KASKELAND “Queen of the Norwegian-American Settlements, Koshkonong Prairie, Wisconsin” describes the early Norwegian immigrants who had heard tantalizing tales of America told by the early settlers who arrived in New York in 1825 aboard the sloop Restaurasjonene-often referred to as the Norwegian Mayflower. Back in Norway people listened intently to stories from the so-called “Sloopers” about rich farmland available for $1.25/acre, and the overall ability to raise their families in this new world. “Koshkonong”, a Native American term meaning “the lake we live by” when heard by the Norwegian pioneers translated to “Kaskeland”.
This documentary film explores the earliest Norwegian pioneers who arrived on the prairie in 1839 and focuses on their life and living conditions for the first decade.
